Wear Many Hats Episode 52 — Walid Shaharul
Hey everyone it’s Rashad and this is Wear Many Hats presented by Dahsar where we talk about your main gig then we talk about your side hustle.
Walid Shaharul is a Brooklyn based artist that is a self-taught painter from Queens.
He recently had his first solo exhibition put on by the homies over at the art collective, Roosi entitled ‘Safe Space’ at Synesthesia.
Walid’s figures have distorted faces which reminds you of Francis Bacon.
We don’t eat bacon because we’re about that muslim lifestyle. Except for prosciutto and pepperoni.
This is a safe space, no one needs to know about your harams or habibis.
But no really, his show “Safe Space” brings out the bright and attractive backdrops along with bright colors that provide positive and joyful feelings of each of their figures.
Please welcome Walid Shaharul.
I believe we met when I worked at Office Coffee now Aframe shout out to Manny but that was many moons ago.
So are you getting in gym time? Denise has been storying on her gram her gym Rumble fitness life.
That pic of you wit hthe sideways hat, lifting sent me.
I love the couple goals I’m seeing. She documents your gains and trashes you while she’s with her homegirls. This is what I like to see. Friendly competition.
But you’ve been keeping it outdoors on your hike game.
Safe Space
Congrats on your first solo show! How did it go? I wanted to check it out but I didn’t get tickets. I heard there was sound performance of some sort?
I’m very interested in the “Portraits of Grandparents” (Malaysia) oil on canvas painting. So are your grandparents from Malaysia?
This is where I’m dissecting you to the point where I’m not going to ask you where you’re from but based on your paintings you’re from…

From The Roosi site:
“While these paintings are marked by Shaharul’s restrained nature and lurid sense of the absurd, they also attest his abilities in capturing the intricacies of the human form in oil paint. The artist toys with the intimacy and vulnerability of his subjects and their appearance through surrealist variations on mundane routines such as sitting, working, running, swimming and sleeping. He brings these attractively unusual images to life by digging deep into his mind to translate moments into well-articulated profundities.”
I feel like you could paint all the homies because we’re all on our fitness game. From hiking to running. I love your painting of a person running and stretching.
Portrait of Nick Joseph is so good, shout out to Nick Joseph working over at Bode. Holding it down. I copped a Bode corduroy jacket with all this artwork all over it but I’d rather have a Dahsar Walid Shaharul all over print jacket instead.
Have a painting of Nick selling Bode jackets out the back of a store.
Hats OFF
Hats off to you on all these things that you do, for some Wear Many Hats Dahsar solutions have you ever thought about having one of your pieces of artwork on clothing? As in collaborating with us?
