Hey everyone it’s Rashad and this is Wear Many Hats presented by Dahsar where we talk about your main gig then we talk about your side hustle.
Grace Hwang is a Korean American graphic designer, illustrator, and art director that brings light vibes to a heavy world.
We met during the Philly days through DJ SYLO and Matthew Law parties, degrees of separation from going to Temple University, and also running into each other in Brooklyn. Always happy running into Grace.
Grapes Hwang is super talented.
She is part of the Lucky Numbr design studio.
Lucky to have Grace Hwang.
How’s it going? Welcome back from Mexico. How was that?
Did you run into Philly people there? Everyone’s in Mexico right now. Huge trend right now but I’m for it.
Drop your favorite thing to do?
Honestly I listen to all your reviews and recs. I remember when I ran into you by my favorite vintage shop Fox & Fawn RIP and I copped the Lucky Numbr longsleeve that I wish I was wearing my Fortunes long sleeve tee you guys created.
Such a great tee.
I told you I was going to Berlin that year and you were like go check out Tempelhof Airport. I did see the pics you posted on the gram and I actually went and did that. So thanks again for the rec.
Who are the members of Lucky Numbr?
How did you guys come up with the name Lucky Numbr? What’s your favorite number?
Who are some of your collabs for Lucky Numbr?
“Lucky Numbr is a multidisciplinary and multidimensional creative studio, mixing traditional 2D techniques with modern 3D technologies. Our work is styled to emulate scientific diagrams. Each of our projects activate research in different territories and thinking, while orbiting the core of what we live and create by — our Asian American culture, sci-fi, and symbology.
The result: a visual expression connecting and balancing multiple topics and ideologies.”
I have your new work as my background on my phone. The new Ill Fated Natives covers are stunning. I remember seeing them in Philly, they all go hard. I’m guessing since they hit Lucky Numbr up they’re gearing for new new music.
The designs you did with Banana Magazine were amazing. I saw that you went with the Banana Mag team to do Mexico, I love Vicki and Kathleen. Total sweethearts. Lucky Numbr and Banana out in Mexico, what a dream vacay.
We talked about your Lichen collabo with Lucky Numbr with Ed and Jared on their episode. How did you guys meet up to collaborate?
I wish that I went to that event. Eunice told me she went and since it was 420, well you know the vibes.
Yowie is releasing a few pieces for their 5 year anniversary collaborating with our homie Saeed Ferguson from All Caps Studio, and you and Lichen for a pair of shorts. The most dreamiest collab. This comes full circle the whole Philly to NYC connection.
You gave a lil BTS on your stories of how you created it. You included a Tumbler from One Eye Ceramics. My friend Kim has two of those Lichen Side tables.
I gotta get these shorts obviously to represent. I love everything Shannon Maldonado that has been doing for Philly. Her shop is amazing.
I love that your collabs with Philly runs deep. It was sick to see that you worked with the good homie Raymo Ventura from Deuxwave (du wave) Your illustrations for Bad Bunny and Ilana Glazer. Rap Caviar,
Are you a graphic designer first or illustrator? How did you know you wanted to be an illustrator and have graphic design as a career?
I remember also probably running into you at Little Dragon at Union Transfer. The venue in Philly that was the Spaghetti Warehouse before it turned into a music venue. I know you’ve seen Little Dragon a million times and i’m just short of a million but it’s your all time fav band.
How stoked were you when you got the chance to design a tee for them?
How did that come about?
So I gotta mention, your fits on the gram are amazing. I mean this summer people are on their flowy fit game but you’ve been ahead of the curve forever. You’re illustrations of a character you created in your selfies is a whole new vibe, when you take your fit pics and you add your illustrations is a whole new dimension. They’re fucking sik.
Who are your inspirations for fits? I know Yukimi Nagano from Little Dragon has got to be up there. Maybe Keren O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs?
Hats off to you on all these things that you do, for some Wear Many Hats Dahsar solutions we would love to have Wear Many Hats bucket hat collab with Lucky Numbr in the future. We should def do a short sleeve button up of those insane Ill fated Native covers. No Guy Fieri looking tops but you know you bring new flames to life. Flames over everything you know?
If you were to get a chest tattoo quote in olde english what would it be?
Thanks Grace for coming on the show. This has been a treat. I follow your work very close, big Grace Hwang and Lucky Numbr stan for life.
